Florida HistoryThis is the site of the ancient native American village of Seloy. It is said that this is where Ponce de Leon came ashore in 1513. As you tour the grounds you’ll find the Spring House, a building constructed of native materials, which protects the landmark cross and spring, Ponce de Leon’s hope for youth. Take a drink and see, maybe you’ll have better luck than I. The Discovery Globe maps out the journeys of the early explorers and the Planetarium tracks the voyage of Ponce de Leon and shows how the stars appeared during that time. The Timucuan Indian Exhibit traces the relationship of the Spanish and the native Americans. Florida Archaeological SiteAs an archaeological site, one of the most important finds in the southeast, there have been several major discoveries; Ponce de Leon’s recording landmark and artifacts, the first Christian native American burials, Timucua hut foundations and relics, and evidence that Pedro Menendez’s colony occupied the site during the 16th century. So, within the fifteen acre park there are exhibits, statues, springs, a planetarium, and peacocks, but, I am sorry to say – a drink from the spring is not going to restore your youth. It’s worth a stop though, even if you don’t loose a year or two.
