Traveling Tips - How To Sleep Well While Flying

Many travelers wind up ruining a large part of their vacation by not taking the necessary steps to sleep well on the flight in preparation either for adjusting to a new time zone or getting the maximum out of their travel time.

While some aspects of jet lag can’t be avoided, much of the discomfort and recovery time can be improved after considering a few of these valuable tips.

You will sleep eventually. If you can’t fall asleep on a plane under normal circumstances, many people have success by preparing the day before by taking a nap during the day, then staying up until their flight.

Once they hit the seat, their body tells them it is now time to sleep and doesn’t care if its in first class or coach. This must be done with care. You must be sure that you will be able to sleep on the flight for your usual amount of time which should be around 8 hours. The time your plane lands should be the normal time you would need to wake up and begin a fruitful day.

For example, if you are flying from NY to the UK, if you normally wake up in NY at 8:00 am, be sure the plane will land at 8:00 am UK time so your body can start adjusting itself to the new time zone. If staying awake isn’t possible, another strategy is to get up earlier. If you are used to 8 hours of sleep and then wake up at 4:00 am for the flight, your body will crave those “missing” four hours.

Be sure to dress comfortably. When you are going to a business meeting, you dress for business. When you are going to the gym, you dress for working out. When you go to fly, dress for sleeping. While actual pajamas might not be possible, very loose and comfortable clothing should be worn.

Try accessories. Items like sleep masks will block out light, provide comfort and clearly tell your neighbors that you are not in the mood for chatting. Ear plugs do a great job of eliminating noises. There are brands of luxury sleep masks that come with earphones that will either block sounds or play soothing noises like breaking waves.

The last option if absolutely necessary would be sleeping medication. Of course, a doctor should be consulted as to the best brand for you with your particular circumstances and conditions. Generally it is best to try to find more “natural” ways of solving the sleep problem.

If your body starts to rely on pills, there is a tendency to become more reliant on pills to sleep, then need pills to wake up, then a tolerance builds and you need more and more to do what you used to be able to do by yourself.
