We just arrived home from a delightful evening at one of our favorite state parks, Washington Oaks Gardens State Park which I think, is one of the prettiest parks in all of Florida!
Washington Oaks stretches from the Matanzas River on the west to the Atlantic Ocean on the east.
It is just a short 30 minute drive south of St. Augustine Beach on A1A, a definite must add to your "to do" list.
As you arrive, you will pay a mere $4.00 at the park office. What a bargain!
Driving into the park you enter a beautiful oak hammock. Our first stop was the picnic area to enjoy a light dinner before hiking to the gardens. We had the whole area to ourselves, just us and the squirrels.
We headed off on the trail over to the visitor center. It was low tide so we took a slight detour and walked along the intracoastal waterway.
Jess rescued several jellyfish that had beached themselves by pushing them back out into deeper water. She was very careful to use a palm branch to push them as they have a nasty sting.
Next, we entered the first of the gardens; the rose garden, their sweet aroma filled the air.
Then the soft path led us deeper into the lush gardens alongside a spring fed pond.
The gardens were delightful; a wonderful reprieve from our busy lives.
Heading back down the trail, I heard an unusual bird call. I kept studying the large branches of the old oak tree trying to locate the bird. All of a sudden I heard Jess gasp behind me. She pointed to a huge Great Horned Owl just a short distance away. A magnificent bird sighting to end a magnificent evening.
The shoreline on the east side of the park is dotted with an unusual rock that is unique to this area called coquina which means "cockle shell or shellfish" in Spanish.
The beach is quiet, peaceful and oh so relaxing. Be sure to enjoy both areas of this beautiful park.
Don't miss Washington Oaks Gardens State Park, it is well worth the drive....
